Introducing – Jordan P. Gates, MSFS, CFP®, CLU, ChFC, CFS, MSFS, LUTCF Jordan is a gregarious powerhouse and a wealth strategies genius for high-net worth to ultra-high-net worth clients. He's an expert speaker, marketer, manager, writer, advisor, case writer, investment advisor, and wealth planner. Does he have enough letters after his name yet, or what? He doesn't know how to quit. Jordan was Mike's manager when he was a captive case writer for five planners from '92 to '94. So they know each other well. Mike owes a lot of his expertise to Jordan, due to his imparting a million little gold nuggets of valuable information about the business on a daily basis - from how to do basic things in Excel in Windows 3.1, writing financial plans, to making complex strategies simple and easy to understand. He's been one the leading wealth managers in the Portland, OR area since the '90's. And best of all, he's a great family man (has two great kids and is still married to his first wife of 25 years which is rare these days), involved with his church and his community, a good drummer, and the only one Mike knows that can debate him on Star Trek time travel paradoxes! He's been working on putting all of his presentations together and selling them for years. He finally did it, and sold some to satisfied advisors, so we're "going global" by making it a product/service on the site. It would take too long to chronicle all of Jordan's accomplishments in the industry, so here's a link to the "modest" version of his bio in PDF format. Everything in the Fusion Wealth Planning Process is copyrighted and trademarked by Fusion Tax & Financial, Inc. The Fusion Comprehensive Financial Planning and Wealth Planning System (Written by Jordan)The phrase “financial planning” means different things to different advisors. Many advisors would state that their firms indeed offer comprehensive financial planning. They may be correct as they would define it. However, I would define it differently. I believe the key to success of future progressive firms will be found by embracing the benefits of fee-based comprehensive financial planning. The rewards of doing this have been in print for years. Not only is the client better served, but the company’s bottom line is enhanced due to the total comprehensive approach that's performed by the advisor. Unfortunately, the current trend in the industry is moving advisors away from comprehensive financial planning. Today, many advisors who profess to be financial planners have in fact morphed into either investment money managers or life insurance company product salespeople that focus on package sales of products that are popular at any given time. Comprehensive wealth planning and the recommendations and products that result in this type of process not only significantly improve the client’s financial condition; they also significantly enhance the advisor's bottom line. The Fusion Wealth Planning System is designed for professional financial planners. These advisors will in most cases hold the CFP® mark, or its equivalent (ChFC, MSFS, PFP), and strive to portray themselves as true professional financial planning practitioners. These planners are committed to analyzing a client’s whole financial condition, and making recommendations regarding all five of the disciplines of the CFP® education. These Include: ● Risk Management ● Investment Analysis ● Income Tax Analysis ● Estate Analysis ● Retirement Planning This Complete Wealth Planning System has Three Areas of Focus: 1. The Wealth Planning Process 2. Wealth Planning Tools 3. Wealth Planning Strategies Wealth Planning Process This is the practice management part of the system, and includes all the tools necessary to move the client from the initial meeting via seminar to the one-on-one opener (Get Acquainted Meeting), plan presentation, implementation and annual reviews; as well as when to contact the client throughout the years. It includes the opening presentation and all other presentations as you move the client through the planning process; such as letters, seminars tracking systems, tools, and many other aids to assist the advisor to work on a professional basis with higher net worth clients. Wealth Planning Tools This training involves the technical side of the business and teaches the tools used in advanced financial, estate, and tax planning. It also teaches the advisor how to communicate these tools using creative and easy to understand PowerPoint presentations, so that the client can internalize the impact of these various financial tools in their lives. These presentations are not what many packages offer with slide after slide of words, bullets and numbers. They are for the most part, animated with pictures, charts and graphs to help your clients easily conceptualize each idea. A short list of the many tools would be; CRUT’s, NIMCRUTS’s GRAT’s CLT’s, ILIT’s FLP’s Wills, Trusts, QPRT’s, life Insurance applications, and many others. Wealth Planning Strategies This information dovetails with the Tools training. Whereas the Tools assist advisors to understand and educate clients regarding what the tool is and how it functions, the Strategies training illustrates when and why the tools or a combination of the tools are used, to address and minimize common financial traps that clients are exposed to. The Fusion Wealth Planning Process is Not for Everybody! There is a growing amount of advisors who hold the CFP® mark and readily admit that they're not financial planning practitioners, and instead focus on gathering assets under management as their core discipline. Many financial advisors have chosen to limit the scope of their firm's offerings to investment management, and this approach can be very successful. Many of the Tools and Strategies presentations will be very useful to advisors who wish to focus primarily on money management. The investment presentations can help these advisors illustrate financial concepts in a very professional way. That being said, the Fusion Wealth Planning Process would not be suitable for this type of advisor. This process is designed for the advisor who wishes to hold themselves out as, and conduct their business, as a Financial Planning Practitioner; and it is designed for the planner who wishes to embark on performing comprehensive financial planning. The Wealth Planning Process is designed to work together with higher net worth clients to form a high-value synergy. It also addresses the benefits of adapting this process in a firm that is committed to comprehensive financial planning. More About the Fusion Wealth Planning Process This process that I created has evolved over 25 years to what it is today. My vast knowledge and experience conducting thousands of interviews, training hundreds of advisors, and accomplishing significant educational and production benchmarks has contributed to the system that exists today. Again, a key reason this system is so successful is because it includes thousands of animated (not just text) PowerPoint slides that uniquely and creatively educate clients in a way that makes complex financial strategies easy to understand, embrace, and implement. For the most part, these presentations do not consist solely of sentence after sentence of dry text, they use creative animations, humor, and pictures to communicate complex ideas. This Wealth Planning approach is distinctly different from traditional financial sales systems. The processes are truly consultative, holistic, and deals significantly more with the psychological issues regarding wealth and transitioning from the accumulation to the distribution phase of those nearing, or are already in retirement. The heart of this system includes comprehensive software including year-by-year income tax and cash flow projections that illustrate the benefits of implementing the financial strategies covered in the planning process. The software is not included with the system. It is called Navi-Plan, and can be purchased through them. We have also given our advisors the type of advanced training and presentation tools that have not been made available to other firms. We've looked around, and found this system to be unique. Mastery Communication Techniques: Fusion Competence ExtenderTM Making the Complex Simple, so Clients (and planners) will "Get It" the First time. As you may know, there are four generally recognized levels of competence in any discipline.
1. Unconscious Incompetence 2. Conscious Incompetence 3. Conscious Competence 4. Unconscious Competence But as I have worked as a professional financial planner over the years, I have discovered that there is a fifth level of competency. This level creates the Fusion Competence ExtenderTM which adds a revolutionary level of competence known as "Mastery Communication." Even if one is an unconscious competent and completely understands a complex financial tool or strategy, it is meaningless if he or she can't communicate it to others in a way they can grasp and internalize. All of your education, experience, and efforts will be for not. Below is a picture illustrating the levels of competency. The Fusion Competence ExtenderTM
For example, I have met with hundreds of attorneys, CPAs, and financial advisers who say, "Charitable trusts are great, and I've explained them to clients, but nobody wants to implement them." With the aid of the presentation tools that I have written, I have learned how to make these complex strategies easy to grasp and internalize which results in the vast majority of my Wealth Planning Clients to embrace and implement these strategies. This is why our closing ratios and retention rates are so high. It is due to the mastery communication through creative presentations. Fusion will help you reach this highest level of competency which is needed to communicate complex strategies to high-net-worth clients. The reason why many clients do not implement complex tools or strategies presented by advisors, is because they were not able to internalize the concept. Think about a complex estate, income or investment strategy that you understand well. How many times have you presented this concept, yet did not quite internalize it in a way that you could see its application with your clients? The Fusion system will help you explain these complex ideas to people so they'll understand and implement these ideas the first time. The success of the system is proven and very teachable. The advisors who have been trained have consistently doubled their average production within a year or two, as well as raised the professional standing of their firms. Some have become mentors to young advisors, and have earned substantial compensation by positioning themselves as a Wealth Planning expert in their firms, making themselves available to do joint work. Below is a chart that illustrates the difference in compensation over five years of just one sample case that is used in the Wealth Planning Process Academy. When you compare a Typical Planner, an Advanced Planner, and a Wealth Planning Planner, it shows the difference in annual GDC from just one high-net-worth client. As you can see, the difference is substantial. However, there needs to be significantly more interviews involved to allow the client to internalize the concepts and strategies. In addition to the compensation, comprehensive wealth planners also service many fewer clients, since these clients require a higher level of service.
Making Comprehensive Financial Planning the Focus The Wealth Planning Advisor must have a passion for comprehensive financial planning, as well as a personal mission to help enhance and maximize their clients' lives to the fullest extent. Additionally, adopting the Fusion Wealth Planning System has proven to increase the firm’s bottom line, through better serving the clients' needs. This practice also raises the advisor's professional standing in the community. It also motivates BD management (and compliance) to cut them slack and give them their best service possible. It's important that any effort to migrate to the Wealth Planning Process be based on these time-tested results, which focus on developing a comprehensive financial planning firm and away from a traditional estate planning or money management firm. This process is not a theory. It is a proven method of increasing the bottom-line through better serving the clients' needs. You cannot say you are practicing comprehensive financial planning unless you have all the critical ingredients that separate a true professional planning practice from one that hides behind a “free” software package used just to sell annuities and/or wrap accounts. What are these Three Critical Ingredients? ● Detailed forward-based income tax projections for federal and state taxes, as well as estate and AMT taxes ● Detailed year-by-year cash flow showing the net income need after-tax ● Detailed projected financial position throughout life expectancy ● Individual asset-based assumptions Advanced Case Design Unit (CDU) One of the core requirements of implementing the Fusion Wealth Planning Process, is to develop or have available, an Advanced Case Design Unit. We understand that many great salespeople are not great technicians, and are not capable (or lack the patience) to input and write comprehensive financial plans. Because of this, they rely on package sales and end up failing to communicate very beneficial solutions to problems that their products would help solve. Our Advanced Case Design Unit assists members (who have been certified by us as Wealth Planning Advisors) with sophisticated case design resources that provide the advisor the sophisticated tools and training to succeed in advanced markets. This Case Design Unit is led by myself and is run by Dan Wilson, CPA, CFP® and Jacque Lefore, CFP® who have over 25 years of combined experience writing sophisticated plans for advisor’s and their clients. Dan and Jacque are also very knowledgeable regarding compliance and Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) laws. You will not find any more knowledgeable professionals anywhere. The unit is also staffed with professional para-planners who share Dan and Jacque’s passion for comprehensive planning. We feel one of the primary reasons for our recruiting success of new advisors, is due to the existence of the Advanced Case Design Unit. This is the missing ingredient for many advisors. Comprehensive software is needed in every Wealth Planning Practice. This software must illustrate the year-by-year net income needed after-tax, since cash flow is the heart of every plan. It is the Wealth Planner's goal to show the client the maximum lifestyle they can achieve each year for the rest of their lives, and this can only be done with detailed year-by-year cash flow projections. In fact, these four critical areas in every plan must be available and understandable. We believe certain types of advisors would thrive using the Wealth Planning Process. These advisors would have the following common characteristics: ● Are consistently champions, regardless of their surroundings ● Have likable personalities ● Are educated and experienced ● Put their clients’ needs before their own ● Are extremely well-liked and trusted by their clients ● Have a high level of integrity and ethics ● Conscience about compliance issues ● Do not feel the need to make a sale during each interview ● Receive few complaints Because of these characteristics, these top producers are often ignored by management because of an attitude of; “Why mess with something that's working?” or “If it isn’t broke, why fix it?” Unfortunately, this perception, in most cases is incorrect. These top advisors generally have issues that they would like to receive guidance on, and are looking for help evaluating and streamlining their individual planning practice. They truly seek the extra attention, and they have earned it due to their high production level. Unfortunately, in most firms, the top 20% who produce 80% of the GDC are the ones that are the most neglected. We can help change all of that! Marketing Plan Assistance Many times, advisors have a great story to tell, but have a dearth of people to tell it to. The benefits of, and taking advantage of our planning services, are very compelling. Once these high-quality planning services are seen, most prospects will embrace our objectives and professional approach to helping them meet their objectives. A common characteristic of many top advisors is that they have a sustained strategic marketing plan. These marketing plans are well thought out, budgeted for, and scheduled (in many cases a full year in advance) to make sure the advisor sees the people necessary to meet his or her financial goals. The benefits of adapting the Fusion Wealth Planning Process include putting together a sustained marketing plan using the many seminars we've created. Without an overall strategic plan, most advisors fall into the cycle of feast or famine. This approach results in an advisor being at least half as productive as they could be. We can help change all that. Answers to Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: What problems will be solved by buying this system? A: This system will allow you to be a more holistic planner. By implementing the sustained marketing plan it will get you out of the “feast or famine” mode of doing business in the typical “Transactional Selling” system. Transactional Selling means going from one commission-based sale to the next. This is not the best way to develop lifelong relationships with clients. The Wealth Planning Process will also advance you to the next level in your practice. We see the three levels of planning as: Typical, Advanced, and Wealth Planners. If your practice is stuck in a typical transactional mode, then practicing these concepts and strategies will help get you to the Advanced level (which is more fee-based than Basic planning). If you already are an Advanced planner, then this will help you move to the next level to become a Wealth Planner. This results in a practice where you have more fun, make more money, have less wasted time, and create long-lasting professional relationships. Q: How does this system solve my needs? What are my needs that this system will help meet? A: Most practitioners want and need to both reduce time spent on work and expenses, and to increase income at the same time. If you want your business to grow and prosper, then there’s only a few ways to do it. First, you can prospect a lot more to get more clients (in general work a lot more on things most people really hate doing). You can take the risk and assume the expenses of hiring and training more assistants. You can also fire your C clients, to free up time to focus on more A & B clients. But the most effective way to make more money per hour worked, and have more profitable and satisfying relationships is evolve into a more professional mode of doing business. The Wealth Planning System is all about how to move toward this higher level of professionalism. At lower levels of professionalism, your only reason for seeing existing clients is because you have something new to sell them. Clients catch on to this quickly and get tired of it and suspicious when you call them the next time. When you function at a higher, professional level, more clients will call you to ask about mundane things like their mortgage, whether or not to take Social Security now or later or make a Roth conversion, should I lease or buy a car, etc. The more you can have these kinds of discussions, the more you’ll build rapport, and the more clients will see you as a trusted advisor that’s looking out only for their best interests. Affluent clients are not stupid, so they know when someone is out to genuinely help them, or just to make a quick buck. Clients that see you as their trusted advisor and confidant will also give many more valuable referrals over time. These precious gems are worth hundreds of small transactions. Q: What are the benefits to me and my practice in using this system? A: It transitions your practice so that you'll become a trusted advisor to your client’s, verses a package salesperson. This helps you communicate complex strategies in a way that makes them simple and easy to understand. Once clients’ understand the beneficial financial strategies that will enhance their lives, it’s easy to get them to implement. Believe me, you’re going to make much more money implementing these strategies compared to whatever you’re been doing. You’ll also get about three times the amount of qualified referrals. It's all about making more money, working less, and being the true professional to clients' that you've always wanted to be. This system allows you to engage the people that have the resources to pay you fairly, and not waste your time. Q: Why do I need to buy, learn, and practice this? A: You don’t! One of my favorite definitions of insanity is the person who is locked in a room and has to get out. Fortunately he has found a key ring full of keys and so he proceeds to try to unlock the door with the same key over and over again. You can continue to fumble along like this person and never get out of your small room, or you can try another key that will open the door to new opportunities. This isn’t for everyone. This is for planners that want and need to move to the next level. Planners want to move to the next level for various reasons. Some need to double or triple their income. Some just need to be and feel more “professional,” in contrast with being a just another above average salesperson. Some want to become more efficient and work less hours. But if you do want to move to the next level, this is an excellent way to do it. Q: This system costs a lot of money! Why is it worth it? A: It took a monumental effort over 25 years, and earning most all of the professional designations and degrees one can get, to amass this amount of profitable experience and knowledge. And unlike some people that have been in the business for 25 years, in reality, they have been in the business only one year - 25 times. My expertise, knowledge, and systems are refined and perfected more and more each year (and kept current with product, regulations, and tax law changes). Again, nobody at this level of experience is going to take all of the time to depart their wisdom and expertise to you, without being fairly compensated. They are busy managing their practice and their clients. Nor are they going to just give you all of their decades of the hard and tedious work it took to make media presentations and other documents. So you may find someone selling a system like this, for less money, but it won’t be near as useful. If you can get a jump start in a short period of time, by tapping into my knowledge, skills, and experience, you can shave years of hard knocks off of your learning curve. Q: What are the ongoing annual fees? A: It’s 25% of the initial price to renew annually. Q: What's the deal with additional users in one financial planning office? A: It's an additional 25% per additional user. So for two users in the first year it would cost 125% of the normal price. Q: Can I join your Broker Dealer/RIA and/or Branch Office? A: Yes! In some cases, the advisor needs more coaching and hands-on training. In these circumstances, it makes sense for them to be with the same BD/RIA, and in some cases, our Branch Office in Lake Oswego, OR. Q: Do I have to join your Broker Dealer, RIA, and/or Branch Office? A: No. Q: How do I use your Advanced Case Design Unit to make financial plans, how much does that cost, and what are the average turnaround times? A: Anyone can hire our CDU to create financial plans or do comprehensive analysis or spreadsheets. You don’t need to have purchased any part our Fusion system, nor be a member. Our Advanced Case Design Unit (CDU) is available to input and design comprehensive financial plans for you. We use NaviPlan software. The costs are $125 per hour. If you wish to me consult on a case, the charge is $250 per hour. This is for case design only. If you would like me to assist you meeting with one of your clients, that is done on a agreed upon split case percentage in advance. The number of hours per plan varies due to the complexity of the case and amount of custom reports needed. For a comprehensive plan, (with me consulting for one hour) it would cost between $1,500 and $2,500 and turnaround times between receiving the completed fact finder and/or to make revisions to a plan are around four business days for members (non-members average six days turnaround time). Q: What do compliance departments think about this system? A: That depends greatly on which compliance department we are talking about. There are distinctly different rules that are applied for someone who holds themselves out as a Registered Representative (RR) vs. one who holds themselves out as a Investment Advisor Representative (IAR). A RR is subject to rules by FINRA while a IAR is subject to different rules and are regulated by the individual states or the SEC. All IAR’s have to work under a Registered Investment Advisor and have the licensing to practice in this area. I have seen some compliance departments with a BD who treat all activity using the RR rules and don’t have an understanding of the IAR rules. Since virtually all the information in the Fusion Wealth Planning system is generic in nature and does not address individual products, any activities using the materials from the system should be supervised using the RIA rules. I am happy to discuss this more on an individual basis. Q: How long is the learning curve, and when should I expect results? A: That’s going to be directly proportional to your previous education, skills, and experience. If you’re already at the unconscious competent level, becoming competent with this system would take about six months. If you’re new to the industry, the curve could be as long five years. Q: What could my practice be like in a year using this system? A: By mastering these presentation techniques to make the complex simple, and understanding the advanced tools that can be of benefit your clients, you can expect to double the average compensation per case that you’re accustomed to. See the chart above. What You'll Get There are Three Wealth Planning AcademiesThe Wealth Planning Process makes available comprehensive training to its members.
